പ്രപഞ്ച സൃഷ്ടിയില്‍ ദൈവ കരങ്ങളില്ലെന്ന് വിഖ്യാത ഭൗതിക ശാസ്ത്രഞ്ജന്‍ സ്റ്റീഫന്‍ ഹോക്കിങ്‌സ്.
പ്രപഞ്ചോല്പ്പത്തിക്കു കാരണമായ മഹാസ്‌ഫോടനം (ബിഗ് ബാങ്) ശാസ്ത്രനിയമങ്ങളുടെ അനിവാര്യമായ പരിണതിയാണ്. ഇതിന് പിന്നില്‍ ദൈവത്തിന്റെ കരങ്ങള്‍ പ്രവര്‍ത്തിച്ചിട്ടില്ല. പ്രപഞ്ചം ഉണ്ടായതെങ്ങിനെ എന്ന് വിശദീകരിക്കാന്‍ ഒരു ദൈവിക ശക്തിയുടേയും ആവശ്യമില്ലെന്നും അദ്ദേഹം വിശദീകരിയ്ക്കുന്നു.
തന്റെ പുതിയ പുസ്തകമായ 'ദ ഗ്രാന്റ് ഡിസൈനി'ലൂടെയാണ് സ്റ്റീഫന്‍ ഹോക്കിങ്‌സ് പ്രപഞ്ചോല്‍പത്തിയെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള ചിന്തകള്‍ പങ്കുവെച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. പ്രപഞ്ചം സ്വയം ഭൂവല്ലെന്നും ദൈവം സൃഷ്ടിച്ചതാണെന്നുമുള്ള ഐസക് ന്യൂട്ടന്റെ വാദം ഹോക്കിങ്‌സ് നിരാകരിയ്ക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.
ശൂന്യതയില്‍ നിന്ന് പ്രപഞ്ചം സ്വയം രൂപപ്പെടാം. ഗുരുത്വാകര്‍ഷണബലമാണ് ഇതിന്റെ അടിസ്ഥാനം. പക്ഷെ ശൂന്യതയ്ക്കു പകരം സൃഷ്ടിക്കു നിദാനമായി മറ്റെന്തോ ഒന്ന് അവിടെ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നിരിക്കണം. അക്കാരണംകൊണ്ടു തന്നെയാണ് ഈ പ്രപഞ്ചവും നമ്മളും നിലനില്‍ക്കുന്നത്.

സായിബാബയുടെ അത്ഭുതം
പുട്ടപര്‍ത്തിയിലെ സായിബാബ തന്റെ ആശ്രമത്തില്‍ ദര്‍ശനത്തിനു വരുന്ന പുരുഷാരത്തിനിടയില്‍ നിന്ന്നിങ്ങളുടെ പേരു വിളിച്ച് കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ പറയുന്ന അത്ഭുത സിദ്ധിയെക്കുറിച്ച് വായിച്ച രണ്ടു പേര്‍ അതൊന്ന്പരീക്ഷിക്കണം എന്ന് കരുത് സായിബാബയുടെ ആശ്രമത്തില്‍ ചെന്നു. കുറെ ദിവസം പ്രാര്‍ത്ഥനയിലൊക്കെ പങ്ക്കൊണ്ടെങ്കിലും ഇവരെ ബാബ വിളിക്കുകയോ പറയുകയോ ഒന്നു ചെയ്തില്ല. അങ്ങനെ ഇവര്‍ ആശ്രമത്തിലെ ഒരുസഹായിയെ സമീപിക്കുന്നു. ബാബ തങ്ങളെ മാത്രം വിളിച്ചില്ലെന്നും നിരാശയുണ്ടെന്നുമൊക്കെ അയാളോട്കാച്ചുന്നു. ഇവരുടെ കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ ഒക്കെ ചോദിച്ചു മനസ്സിലാക്കിയ അയാള്‍ നാളെ ഒരു പ്രത്യേക തൂണിനു സമീപംഇരുന്നാല്‍ ചിലപ്പോള്‍ ബാബ വിളിച്ചേക്കുമെന്നുമൊക്കെ പറയുന്നു. സഹായിയോട് ഇവര്‍ പറഞ്ഞ വിവരങ്ങള്‍ഒക്കെ സത്യസന്ധമായിരുന്നെങ്കിലും ഒരു നമ്പര്‍ ഇറക്കിയിരുന്നു. ഒരാള്‍ തന്റെ വിവരങ്ങള്‍ എന്ന മട്ടില്‍സഹായിയോട് പറഞ്ഞത് മറ്റെയാളുടെ കാര്യങ്ങളായിരുന്നു. മറ്റെയാള്‍ തിരിച്ചും.
പിറ്റേന്ന് തൂണിനു സമീപമിരുന്നെങ്കിലും ബാബ വിളിച്ചില്ല. വീണ്ടും സഹായിയെ കാണുന്നു. അയാള്‍ കുറച്ച് കൂടികുശലപ്രശ്നം നടത്തുന്നു. നാളെ എന്തായാലും വിളിക്കും എന്ന് ഉറപ്പുകൊടുക്കുന്നു.
പിറ്റേന്ന് സായി ബാബ വരുന്നു...അതിലൊരാളെ വിളിക്കുന്നു...അയാളെ സംബന്ധിച്ച കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ മുഴുവന്‍കൃത്യമായി പറയുന്നു. കുറച്ച് കഴിഞ്ഞ് മറ്റെയാളെ വിളിക്കുന്നു. അയാളുടേയും കാര്യങ്ങള്‍പറയുന്നു..കൃത്യമായിത്തന്നെ...
ഒറ്റ കുഴപ്പമേയുള്ളൂ....
സഹായിയോട് പറഞ്ഞു കൊടുത്തപോലെ ഒരാളെ വിളിച്ച് സായി ബാബ പറഞ്ഞത് മറ്റെയാളുടെകാര്യങ്ങളായിരുന്നു. രണ്ടാമനെ വിളിച്ച് പറഞ്ഞത് ആദ്യത്തെ ആളുടെ കാര്യങ്ങളും!!

കാല്‍പന്തു കളിയുടെ പ്രത്യയ ശാസ്ത്രം
ഒരു ലോകകപ്പ് കൂടി അവസാനിച്ചു.ലോക ഭൂപടത്തിലെ 32 രാജ്യങ്ങള്‍ ലോകത്തെ ഫുട്ബോള്‍ പ്രേമികളെ കാല്‍പന്തു കളിയുടെ സൌന്ദര്യത്തില്‍ കുടുക്കിയിട്ടപ്പോള്‍ ഇങ്ങു കേരളത്തിലും 30 കോടിയോളം വരുന്ന മലയാളികളും ബ്രസീലിന്റെയും അര്‍ജെന്റിനയുടെയും ജെര്‍മനിയുടെയും എല്ലാം പതാകകള്‍ നെന്ജിലെന്തി നൃത്തംചെയ്തു.ആ ആരവത്തില്‍ തകര്‍ന്നു വീണത്‌ ബെര്‍ലിന്‍ മതിലിനെക്കാളും ഉറപ്പുള്ള മലയാളിയുടെ ഇടുങ്ങിയ ചിന്തകള്‍ ആയിരുന്നു.കോഴിക്കോട്ടും മലപ്പുറത്തും കണ്ണൂരും ആയിരങ്ങള്‍ ജാതിമത പ്രായ ഭേദമെന്യേ രാജ്യങ്ങളുടെ അതിര്‍വരമ്പുകള്‍ പോട്ടിചെരിഞ്ഞു ഫുട്ബോള്‍ എന്നാ കയികമാമാമാന്കത്തിനു സാക്ഷ്യംവഹിച്ചു.ഇന്ത്യ എന്നാ മഹാരാജ്യത്തിലെ തന്നെ വിവിധ സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളെ തമ്മിലടിപ്പിച്ചു കോടികള്‍ കൊയ്യുന്ന ഐ.പി.എല്‍ എന്ന ക്രിക്കറ്റ്‌ ചൂതാട്ടതെക്കളും മാന്യതയുള്ള ഒരു കളിയായി ഫുട്ബോള്‍ മാറി.കരുതവന്റെയും വെളുതവന്റെയും കുപ്പായങ്ങള്‍ അണിഞ്ഞു വലിയ സ്ക്രീനില്‍ കളി കണ്ടപ്പോള്‍ പണ്ട് എബ്രഹാം ലിങ്കണും നെല്‍സണ്‍ മണ്ടെലയും വിപ്ലവം നടത്തി ഇല്ലാതാക്കിയ വര്‍ണ വിവേചനത്തിന്റെ ബാക്കി നിന്ന അവശിഷ്ടങ്ങള്‍ കൂടി തൂത്തെറിഞ്ഞു.എന്നിട്ടും ലോകത്തെ കാര്‍ന്നു തിന്നുന്ന അന്ധവിശ്വാസം എന്ന രോഗം ഇത്തവണ പോള്‍ എന്ന ജര്‍മന്‍ നീരാളിയുടെ രൂപത്തില്‍ ലോകത്ത് അവതരിച്ചു.ഒത്തിണക്കത്തോടെ കളിക്കുന്ന നല്ല കളിക്കാറുള്ള ടീംവിജയിക്കും എന്നും ഒരു കാഴ്ച ബെന്ഗ്ലാവിലും ഇരുന്നു ഒരു നീരളിയും പ്രവചിച്ചത് കൊണ്ട് ഒരു ടീമും വിജയിക്കുകയില്ലെന്നു മനസ്സിലാക്കാനുള്ള സാമാന്യ ബുദ്ധി പോലും ലോക ജെനതക്കില്ലെന്നു തോന്നിപോവുന്നു.ഇനി ഒരു പക്ഷെ നീരാളി ജ്യോത്സ്യന്‍ പ്രവചിച്ചത് കൊണ്ടാണോ ജര്‍മ്മനി അലസമായി കളിച്ചത്?.എന്തായാലും അതവിടെ നില്‍ക്കട്ടെ.മെസ്സിയോ രൂണിയോ മുല്ലെരോ ഗോളടിക്കട്ടെ.ഇനി ഒരു നാലു കൊല്ലം കൂടി കാത്തിരിക്കാം.ജാതി മത വര്‍ഗ വര്‍ണ ഭേദമെന്യേ ലോകജനത ഒരൊറ്റ പന്തിനു പുറകെ കണ്ണുകള്‍ പായിക്കുന്നത്‌ കാണാന്‍.കളി തുടരട്ടെ.

ചൊവ്വാദോഷം
നമ്മുടെ കുരുന്നുകള്‍ ആദ്യം പഠിക്കേണ്ടത് അന്ധവിശ്വാസമെന്ന വിഷയത്തിലെ പാഠങ്ങളാണോ? ആണെന്നാണ് വിദ്യാഭ്യാസസ്ഥാപനങ്ങള്‍ തോന്നുംപടി നടത്തുന്ന മത, സമുദായ സ്ഥാപനങ്ങളുടെ മേലാവികളുടെ തീരുമാനം. അങ്ങനെയെങ്കില്‍ ആ പാഠപുസ്തകത്തിലെ ഒന്നാംപാഠം ചൊവ്വാദോഷവും രണ്ടാംപാഠം രാഹുകാലവുമൊക്കെയായിരിക്കും. ജ്യോതിഷികള്‍ നമ്മുടെ ജീവിതങ്ങളെ വാഴാന്‍ ഉള്ള അരങ്ങൊരുക്കിയ മാദ്ധ്യമരാജാക്കന്മാരായ വാരികകള്‍ക്കും ചാനലുകള്‍ക്കും ഈ സമൂഹത്തെ ഇങ്ങനെയൊരു വിപര്യയത്തില്‍ കൊണ്ടെത്തിച്ചതില്‍ അഭിമാനിക്കാം.
ജൂണ്‍ ഒന്നാംതീയതി, സ്കൂളുകള്‍ തുറക്കുകയാണ്. എന്നാല്‍, ഇത്തവണ ജൂണ്‍ ഒന്ന് ചൊവ്വാഴ്ചയാണ്. ചൊവ്വാഴ്ചയെ അശുഭകരമായി കാണുന്ന ജ്യോതിഷാടിസ്ഥിതമായ അന്ധവിശ്വാസികള്‍ക്ക് അക്കാര്യത്തില്‍ താല്പര്യമില്ല. അതിനാല്‍ മിക്ക മാനേജ്മെന്റ് സ്കൂളുകളും വിദ്യാരംഭവും അധ്യയനവര്‍ഷാരംഭവും ജൂണ്‍ ഒന്നില്‍നിന്ന് രണ്ടിലേക്കു മാറ്റിയിരിക്കുകയാണ്, തന്നിഷ്ടപ്രകാരം.
സര്‍ക്കാര്‍തലത്തിലും ഈ പ്രശ്നം ചര്‍ച്ച ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ടെന്നാണു ശ്രുതി. എന്നാല്‍, ഒരു ഇടതുപക്ഷസര്‍ക്കാരും ഇടതുപക്ഷ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസമന്ത്രിയും ഭരിക്കുന്ന സമയത്ത് അത്തരം ചൊവ്വാദോഷപ്പേടിയും അന്ധവിശ്വാസവും പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കുന്നത് ഉചിതമല്ല എന്ന തീരുമാനത്തെത്തുടര്‍ന്ന് സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ സ്കൂളുകള്‍ ജൂണ്‍ ഒന്ന് ചൊവ്വാഴ്ചമുതല്‍ തന്നെ തുറന്നു പ്രവര്‍ത്തിക്കുവാനും പ്രവേശനോത്സവമുള്‍പ്പെടെയുള്ള ആഘോഷങ്ങള്‍ നടത്താനും തീരുമാനിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു.
പക്ഷേ, സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ സ്കൂളുകള്‍ വേണമെങ്കില്‍ തുറന്നുകൊള്ളട്ടെ, ഞങ്ങള്‍ ചൊവ്വയെ പിന്നിട്ട് ബുധനേ തുടക്കം കുറിക്കുന്നുള്ളൂ എന്നു് മാനേജ്മെന്‍റുകള്‍ തീരുമാനിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു.
ഏതായാലും കുരുന്നുമനസ്സില്‍ത്തന്നെ അന്ധവിശ്വാസത്തിന്റെ അബദ്ധധാരണകള്‍ പാകുന്ന ഈ തീരുമാനത്തിനെതിരെ വേണ്ട ബലമുപയോഗിച്ച് നടപടിയെടുക്കാന്‍ സര്‍ക്കാരിനു കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടില്ല. അല്ലെങ്കിലും സര്‍ക്കാരിനെ പഴിച്ചിട്ടെന്തു കാര്യം? പതിമ്മൂന്നാം നമ്പര്‍ മുറി കോടതിക്കു വേണ്ട എന്നു തീരുമാനിച്ച ഒരു നീതിന്യായ വ്യവസ്ഥയാണല്ലോ ഇവിടുള്ളത്.
ഏതായാലും ചൊവ്വാഴ്ച തന്നെ സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ സ്കൂളുകള്‍ തുറക്കാന്‍ തീരുമാനിച്ച സര്‍ക്കാരിന്റെ നടപടി ശ്രദ്ധേയമാണെന്നത് പറയാതെ വയ്യ.
ആരാണ് യുക്തിവാദി?
യുക്തിപൂര്‍വ്വം ചിന്തിക്കുകയും അതിനനുസരിച്ച് പ്രവര്‍ത്തിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നവരാണ് യുക്തിവാദികള്‍.യുക്തിവാദി എന്ന വാക്കിന്റെ അര്‍ത്ഥം മാത്രം എടുത്താല്‍ ഭൂരിഭാഗം മനുഷ്യരും യുക്തിവാദികള്‍ ആണെന്ന് കാണുവാന്‍ കഴിയും.യുക്തിഭദ്രമായ ആശയങ്ങളില്‍ മാത്രം വിശ്വസിക്കുന്ന ആളാണ് യുക്തിവാദി.ശാസ്ത്രത്തിനു തെളിയിക്കാന്‍ കഴിയാത്ത ഒന്നിനെയും അങ്ങീകരിക്കാന്‍ യുക്തിവാദികള്‍ തയ്യാറല്ല.ഇങ്ങനെ ചിന്തിക്കുന്നവരുടെ കൂട്ടായ്മകളും നിലവിവുണ്ട്. കേരള യുക്തിവാദി സംഘം, ഭാരതീയ യുക്തിവാദി സംഘം എന്നിവ അതില്‍ ചിലതാണ്‌.

മകരവിളക്കും മകരജ്യോതിയും
അങ്ങിനെ അവസാനം അതും നടന്നു. ശബരിമലതട്ടിപ്പുകാര്‍ യുക്തിവാദികള്‍ക്കുമുന്നില്‍ സാഷ്ടാഗം വീണു. മകരവിളക്ക് എന്നത് മനുഷ്യര്‍ തന്നെ കത്തിക്കുന്നതാണ് എന്ന് ദേവസ്വം അംഗങ്ങളും മന്ത്രിയും തന്ത്രിയും എല്ലാം സമ്മതിച്ചു.രണ്ടു ദിവസം കൊണ്ടാണ് എല്ലാവരുടേയും ഈ ഏറ്റു പറച്ചില്‍.
മകരജ്യോതി കത്തിക്കുന്നിടത്ത് പോകാന്‍ അനുവദിക്കണം എന്നാവശ്യപ്പെട്ട് യുക്തിവാദിസംഘം ഹൈക്കോടതിയില്‍ ഹര്‍ജി കൊടുത്തിരുന്നു.
ഹൈക്കോടതിയില്‍ കൊടുത്ത കേസില്‍ വിധി യുക്തിവാദികള്‍ക്ക് അനുകൂലമായിരിക്കും എന്ന് വ്യക്തമായപ്പോഴാണ് പുതിയ ഏറ്റു പറച്ചിലുകളുമായി തട്ടിപ്പുകാര്‍ രംഗത്തെത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. അടുത്ത മകരവിളക്കിന് ടി.വി. ചാനലുകാരുമായ് പോലീസ് സംരക്ഷയില്‍ ചെന്ന് മകരവിളക്ക് മനുഷ്യര്‍ തന്നെ കത്തിക്കുന്നതാണ് എന്ന് തെളിയുന്പോള്‍ ഉണ്ടാകാവുന്ന പ്രത്യാഘാതങ്ങള്‍ ഒഴിവാക്കുവാനുള്ള ഒരു ആസൂത്രിത ശ്രമം മാത്രമാണ് വിവിധ വിശ്വാസ കോണുകളില്‍ നിന്നുള്ള ഈ ഏറ്റു പറച്ചില്‍.മകരവിളക്കും മകരജ്യോതിയും രണ്ടും രണ്ടാണത്രേ... മകരവിളക്ക് മനുഷ്യനിര്‍മ്മിതമാണെന്നും മകരജ്യോതി നക്ഷത്രമാണെന്നും ഇപ്പോള്‍ സമ്മതിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.

ജീവിവര്‍ഗ്ഗങ്ങളെല്ലാം പൊതുപൂര്‍വികന്മാരില്‍ നിന്ന് കാലക്രമത്തില്‍ പ്രകൃതിനിര്‍ദ്ധാരണം എന്ന പ്രക്രിയവഴി രൂപപ്പെട്ടു വന്നവയാണെന്ന് കണ്ടെത്തുകയും സ്ഥാപിക്കുകയും ചെയ്ത ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് പ്രകൃതിശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനാണ്[ക] ചാള്‍സ് റോബര്‍ട്ട് ഡാര്വിന് (ഫെബ്രുവരി 12, 1809 - ഏപ്രില്‍ 19, 1882). ജീവിവര്‍ഗ്ഗങ്ങള്‍ പരിണാമവിധേയമാണെന്ന വസ്തുത ഡാര്‍വിന്റെ ജീവിതകാലത്തുതന്നെ ശാസ്ത്രസമൂഹവും, ഒരളവുവരെ ജനസാമാന്യവും അംഗീകരിച്ചു. പരിണാമപ്രക്രിയയുടെ അടിസ്ഥാനവിശദീകരണമായി 1930-കളോടെ സ്വീകരിക്കപ്പെട്ട ഡാര്‍വിന്റെ പ്രകൃതിനിര്‍ദ്ധാരണവാദം,[1] ആധുനിക പരിണാമസിദ്ധാന്തത്തിന്റെ മൂലതത്ത്വമാണ്. ജീവന്റെ വൈവിദ്ധ്യത്തിന് ഏകീകൃതവും യുക്തിബദ്ധവുമായ വിശദീകരണം തരുന്ന ഡാര്‍വിന്റെ കണ്ടുപിടുത്തം, മാറ്റങ്ങളോടെയാണെങ്കിലും, ഇന്ന് ജീവശാസ്ത്രത്തിന്റെ അടിസ്ഥാനമായിരിക്കുന്നു. 1859-ല്‍, ഡാര്‍വിന്റെ ജീവിവര്‍ഗ്ഗങ്ങളുടെ ഉല്പത്തിയുടെ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരണത്തോടെ, പൊതുവായ തുടക്കത്തില്‍ നിന്നുള്ള പരിണാമം, പ്രകൃതിയിലെ വൈവിദ്ധ്യത്തിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും സ്വീകാര്യമായ ശാസ്ത്രീയ വിശദീകരണമായി അംഗീകരിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. പിന്നീട് പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ച, മനുഷ്യന്റെ ഉത്ഭവവും ലൈംഗികനിര്‍ദ്ധാരണവും എന്ന കൃതിയില്‍ മനുഷ്യപരിണാമവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട വിഷയങ്ങളാണ് പരിഗണിക്കപ്പെട്ടത്. മനുഷ്യനിലേയും മൃഗങ്ങളിലേയും വികാരപ്രകടനങ്ങള്‍ എന്ന കൃതിയാണ് തുടര്‍ന്നു പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചത്. സസ്യങ്ങളെ സംബന്ധിച്ച് ഡാര്വിന് നടത്തിയ ഗവേഷണത്തിന്റെ ഫലങ്ങള്‍ പുസ്തകപരമ്പരയായി പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. ഡാര്‍വിന്റെ അവസാന ഗ്രന്ഥം മണ്ണിരകളെക്കുറിച്ചും മണ്ണിന്റെ രൂപവത്കരണത്തില്‍ അവക്കുള്ള പങ്കിനെക്കുറിച്ചുമായിരുന്നു.
പത്തൊന്‍പതാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിലെ ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞന്മാരില്‍ ഔദ്യോഗികശവസംസ്കാരം നല്‍കി ബഹുമാനിക്കപ്പെട്ട അഞ്ചു പേരില്‍ ഒരാളായിരുന്നു ഡാര്വിന് എന്നത് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ സംഭാവനകള്‍ക്ക് ലഭിച്ച അംഗീകാരത്തിന് തെളിവാണ്.[4] വെസ്റ്റ്മിന്‍സ്റ്റര്‍ ആബിയില്‍ ജോണ്‍ ഹെര്‍ഷലിനും ഐസക് ന്യൂട്ടണും സമീപത്തായാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തെ സംസ്കരിച്ചത്.[5]

Prahlad Jani's claims to have survived without food or water for decades is being bolstered by people who should know better
The crimson-clad old man with the nose ring tries to tell us that he hasn't eaten or drunk anything since the goddess Ambaji touched his tongue with her finger. That must have been around the time of the outbreak of the second world war.
As there are few things so well established as the biological law no human (and no animal) can survive without the regular intake of food and water, it may be sensible to approach his claim with a degree of scepticism. It is not usually very difficult to expose such characters; I have done it in several cases. But Prahlad Jani has some influential protectors.
Dr Sudhir Shah, neurologist and head of Ahmedabad's Sterling hospital, propelled the silly story of Prahlad Jani into the limelight. In a sensational "scientific" research project, he and his team subjected him between 22 April and 6 May to observation and medical scrutiny. This project is financed and supervised by the Indian defence institute of physiology and allied sciences (Dipas), a wing of the defence research and development organisation. The public figurehead of the study is Dipas director Govindasamy Ilavazhagan, who seems to share Shah's enthusiasm for the case. Jointly, the gentlemen were reported to have confirmed that Jani did not eat a crumb and – more crucially – did not drink a single drop of water during his 15 days under observation – which seems completely impossible. Can scientists be so gullible as to salute a man who claims to turn the basic laws of biology upside down? Did they close their eyes (and the non-stop CCTV camera) when Jani quenched his thirst? There is no doubt that the "total surveillance" had loopholes and the "great scientific test" was a farce.
While the test was running, I exposed some of those loopholes in a live programme on India TV: an official video clip revealed that Jani would sometimes move out of the CCTV camera's field of view; he was allowed to receive devotees and could even leave the sealed test room for a sun bath; his regular gargling and bathing activities were not sufficiently monitored and so on. I demanded an opportunity to check the test set-up with an independent team of rationalist experts. There was no immediate reaction from Ahmadabad. But a sudden call from Sterling hospital invited me – live on TV – to join the test the next day itself.
Early morning, ready to fly to Gujarat, we were informed that we had to wait for the permission of the "top boss" of the project. Needless to say: this permission never came.
Similarly, we were unable to attend Shah's first Jani test in November 2003 (that was financed by Dipas too). Shah has a long record of conducting these studies, which up till now have never been discussed in any scientific journal. They merely try to prove his strange sunshine theory: that humans can stop eating and drinking and switch to "other energy sources, sunlight being one". Prahlad Jani is not Shah's first poster child. In 2000/2001, he tested one Hira Manek for more than a year and confirmed his claim that he was feeding on sunshine only (and sometimes a little water). The idea that Shah's research was investigated by Nasa and the University of Pennsylvania was officially denied by both the misrepresented parties.
Shah is a deeply religious Jain. As the president of the Indian Jain Doctors' Federation (JDF), he proposes that via research, the still imperfect science of medicine is to be brought in line with the Jainist '"super-science" as revealed by the omniscient Lord Mahavir. We can only wonder whether his researcher eyes are sometimes clouded by religious zeal. Interestingly, many members of his team are Jains and his partner in the Manek test was a former president of JDF too.
Shah has also suggested this phenomenon might have potential "military use". And – what a shame! – the Indian defence ministry took the bait. Can they really be so naive as to consider putting the army on sunshine diet? We are trying to find out.

Rationalists seek to prove holy men's power not so 'divine' after all
DELHI LETTER: Rural Indians who believe in the supernatural are often prey to charlatans posing as ‘god men’, writes RAHUL BEDI
SEVERAL HUNDRED villagers in northern India watched enthralled as a longhaired sadhu, or holy man, dressed in saffron robes produced ash out of thin air, exploded huge stones with “mental power”, and turned water into blood.
Captivated by his supernatural deeds in a small village near Rohtak in Haryana state, 60km (37 miles) from the capital New Delhi, the people witnessing this magical performance last month were intimidated by the man’s “divine power”.
They hoped, through generous donations at the end of his performance, to dissuade the miracle man from unleashing havoc on their village through his avowed “supernatural” prowess.
But as the awestruck villagers reached into their pockets, the holy man whipped off his saffron robes to reveal himself as the local college science teacher.
He then repeated his presentation, but this time round showed his audience how he had achieved the “miracles” using sleight of hand and a few chemicals.
Such proceedings are regularly organised by the Indian Rationalist Association in a bid to debunk belief in miracles, palmistry and astrology in the countryside, where the majority of people are illiterate and believe in the supernatural.
But, above all, the association endeavours to expose thousands of “god men” or imposters who terrify superstitious rural people into paying them large sums of money.
“Charlatans have a strong hold on rural India and exploit their fears with feats that are a matter of elementary chemistry,” says Sanal Edamaruku, the head of Rationalist International in New Delhi.
Edamaruku (53) joined the rationalist movement as a student activist shortly after it was established several decades ago with the aim of exposing superstition, obscurantism and paranormal claims.
He says thousands of volunteers regularly travel throughout rural India demystifying the so-called holy men’s “wondrous deeds” by demonstrating how exactly they are executed.
He says this sustained campaign has resulted in villagers in states including Haryana, neighbouring Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar and Orissa in the east, stoning the confidence tricksters and chasing them away.
The charlatans’ performances often include setting objects on fire through “mind energy”, eating glass, walking on burning embers, piercing their flesh with steel tridents and, at times, even levitation.
A trick that Edamaruku says never fails to impress people is one that results in a small explosion after water is sprinkled on a stone. However, he says this is accomplished simply by pouring water on scattered sodium crystals.
Similarly, lighting candles or setting piles of dry grass on fire with the flick of a finger is achieved by using chemicals that ignite on exposure to sunlight.
Piercing the body with a trident is managed if it is bent specially at strategic points, giving the impression of deep penetration.
Other “marvels”, such as walking on fire, swallowing ground glass, producing ash out of air and levitating, can be carried out through a combination of chemicals, craftily-erected apparatus and dexterous manipulation in which sleight of hand plays a vital role.
“These tricksters have a basic knowledge of chemistry but an exalted understanding of human psychology,” says Edamaruku.
The Indian Rationalist Association, whose nationwide membership has swollen to about 100,000, was founded six decades ago by a handful of scientists and intellectuals in the southern city of Chennai (formerly Madras).

Over the past four decades the rationalists have successfully targeted internationally popular “god men” who boast a following of millions, exposing their activities as nothing but “well-packaged gimmickry”.
However, repeated challenges by the rationalists to some of the holy men, particularly those in southern India who have millions of local and overseas followers, to perform in their presence have not been accepted.
Indeed, given the extent to which the holy men continue to control people’s lives across India, the rationalists face an arduous task.

SEVERAL HUNDRED villagers in northern India watched enthralled as a longhaired sadhu, or holy man, dressed in saffron robes produced ash out of thin air, exploded huge stones with “mental power”, and turned water into blood.
Captivated by his supernatural deeds in a small village near Rohtak in Haryana state, 60km (37 miles) from the capital New Delhi, the people witnessing this magical performance last month were intimidated by the man’s “divine power”.
They hoped, through generous donations at the end of his performance, to dissuade the miracle man from unleashing havoc on their village through his avowed “supernatural” prowess.
But as the awestruck villagers reached into their pockets, the holy man whipped off his saffron robes to reveal himself as the local college science teacher.
He then repeated his presentation, but this time round showed his audience how he had achieved the “miracles” using sleight of hand and a few chemicals.
Such proceedings are regularly organised by the Indian Rationalist Association in a bid to debunk belief in miracles, palmistry and astrology in the countryside, where the majority of people are illiterate and believe in the supernatural.
But, above all, the association endeavours to expose thousands of “god men” or imposters who terrify superstitious rural people into paying them large sums of money.
“Charlatans have a strong hold on rural India and exploit their fears with feats that are a matter of elementary chemistry,” says Sanal Edamaruku, the head of Rationalist International in New Delhi.
Edamaruku (53) joined the rationalist movement as a student activist shortly after it was established several decades ago with the aim of exposing superstition, obscurantism and paranormal claims.
He says thousands of volunteers regularly travel throughout rural India demystifying the so-called holy men’s “wondrous deeds” by demonstrating how exactly they are executed.
He says this sustained campaign has resulted in villagers in states including Haryana, neighbouring Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar and Orissa in the east, stoning the confidence tricksters and chasing them away.
The charlatans’ performances often include setting objects on fire through “mind energy”, eating glass, walking on burning embers, piercing their flesh with steel tridents and, at times, even levitation.
A trick that Edamaruku says never fails to impress people is one that results in a small explosion after water is sprinkled on a stone. However, he says this is accomplished simply by pouring water on scattered sodium crystals.
Similarly, lighting candles or setting piles of dry grass on fire with the flick of a finger is achieved by using chemicals that ignite on exposure to sunlight.
Piercing the body with a trident is managed if it is bent specially at strategic points, giving the impression of deep penetration.
Other “marvels”, such as walking on fire, swallowing ground glass, producing ash out of air and levitating, can be carried out through a combination of chemicals, craftily-erected apparatus and dexterous manipulation in which sleight of hand plays a vital role.
“These tricksters have a basic knowledge of chemistry but an exalted understanding of human psychology,” says Edamaruku.
The Indian Rationalist Association, whose nationwide membership has swollen to about 100,000, was founded six decades ago by a handful of scientists and intellectuals in the southern city of Chennai (formerly Madras).
